Look, I’m gonna say this straight up

AI is not the shiny new toy we all thought it was. I mean, sure, it can write your emails and maybe even draft a decent article (cough), but let’s talk about the dark side. The side no one’s really prepping for.

Back in 2018, I was at a conference in Austin, and this guy—let’s call him Marcus—told me, “AI is gonna be the biggest thing since the internet.” I laughed. I thought he was exaggerating. Boy, was I wrong.

Fast forward to last Tuesday. I’m sitting at my desk, scrolling through the news, and I see it again. Another data breach. Another company saying, “We’re sorry, but your data’s out there.” And I’m thinking, “This is it. This is the wake-up call we needed.”

But here’s the thing

We’re not ready. Not even close. I’ve been in this industry for over 20 years, and I’ve seen it all. The good, the bad, and the downright ugly. And let me tell you, the ugly is getting uglier.

I was talking to a colleague named Dave the other day. He’s a cybersecurity expert, and he’s seen some stuff. “It’s not just about hackers anymore,” he told me. “It’s about AI. It’s about machines learning how to outsmart us.” And I asked him, “So what do we do?” He just shook his head. “We adapt. Or we get left behind.”

Which… yeah. Fair enough.

And that’s where the problem lies

We’re so busy chasing the next big thing, we’re forgetting to secure what we already have. It’s like building a house on quicksand. You can put up all the walls you want, but if the foundation’s not solid, it’s all gonna come crashing down.

I remember when I first started out. It was 1999, and the internet was this big, scary thing. Everyone was excited, but no one really knew what they were doing. We made mistakes. Lots of them. But we learned. We adapted. We got better.

But this time, it’s different. The stakes are higher. The threats are more sophisticated. And we’re still making the same old mistakes. We’re still thinking, “It won’t happen to us.” Well, guess what? It’s gonna happen to us. It’s gonna happen to all of us.

And if we’re not careful, it’s gonna be a bloodbath.

So what’s the solution?

I don’t know. Honestly, I don’t. But I do know this: we need to start paying attention. We need to start taking this seriously. We need to stop thinking about AI as some kind of magic bullet and start thinking about it as what it really is—a tool. A powerful, dangerous tool that can be used for good or for evil.

And if we’re not careful, it’s gonna be used for evil. A lot of evil.

I was talking to a friend of mine last night. She’s not in the industry, but she’s smart. Really smart. And she said something that stuck with me. “You know,” she said, “it’s like we’re all driving these fancy new cars, but we’re not wearing seatbelts.” And I thought, “Yeah. That’s exactly it.”

We’re driving these fancy new cars, and we’re not wearing seatbelts. And we’re gonna crash. It’s just a matter of time.

But here’s the thing about crashes

They’re not always fatal. Sometimes, you walk away with a few bruises. Sometimes, you learn your lesson. Sometimes, you become a better driver.

But sometimes, you die. And I don’t want to die. I don’t want any of us to die. So let’s start paying attention. Let’s start taking this seriously. Let’s start wearing our seatbelts.

Because the road ahead is gonna be a bumpy one. And if we’re not careful, it’s gonna be a deadly one too.

And look, I’m not saying we should all become cybersecurity experts overnight. But we should at least try to understand the basics. We should at least try to stay informed. We should at least try to protect ourselves.

Because if we don’t, who will?

I mean, seriously, who will?

And while we’re at it, let’s talk about trending topics popular discussions. Because that’s what this is all about, isn’t it? The discussion. The conversation. The sharing of ideas. The learning from each other.

So let’s start talking. Let’s start learning. Let’s start adapting. Because if we don’t, we’re gonna be left behind. And I, for one, don’t want to be left behind.

I want to be at the forefront. I want to be part of the solution. I want to be part of the conversation.

And I want you to be there with me.

So let’s do this. Let’s make a committment to ourselves, to each other, to the future. Let’s make a promise to stay informed, to stay vigilant, to stay safe.

Because the future is gonna be scary. It’s gonna be complicated. It’s gonna be completley unpredictable.

But it’s also gonna be amazing. It’s gonna be full of opportunities. It’s gonna be full of possibilities.

And I, for one, can’t wait to see what happens next.

But only if we’re ready for it. Only if we’re prepared. Only if we’re wearing our seatbelts.

So buckle up, folks. It’s gonna be a wild ride.

And I, for one, am ready for it. Are you?

I guess we’ll find out.
