Look, I’ve Seen This Movie Before

It was 1999. I was a wet-behind-the-ears tech journalist at a major publication, and everyone was losing their minds over the dot-com boom. Remember that? Yeah, me too. And honestly, I’m getting the same vibes now with this AI craze. I mean, it’s completley everywhere, right?

I was at a conference in Austin last Tuesday, and it was like AI, AI, AI. You’d think we were on the brink of curing cancer or something. But honestly, it’s mostly just chatbots and hype.

I ran into an old colleague named Dave there. He’s a smart guy, works at a big tech firm. I asked him, “Dave, honestly, what’s the big deal?” And he looked at me like I’d just asked if the sky was blue. “You don’t get it, do you?” he said. “This is the future.” Which… yeah. Fair enough. But I’m not buying it.

Let Me Tell You About Marcus

Let’s call him Marcus. He’s a friend of mine, works at a startup in San Francisco. Brilliant guy, but he’s been sucked into the AI vortex. He’s working 36-hour days, sleeping under his desk, all for this “revolutionary” AI project. I saw him last month, and he looked like a zombie. “You look like crap,” I told him. “Thanks,” he said, “I feel like crap. But it’s gonna be big.”

I asked him what exactly was so big. He started rambling about “transformative technologies” and “paradigm shifts.” I mean, come on. It’s just code, right? But he was serious. “This is gonna change everything,” he said. I’m not sure but maybe he’s right. But I’m not holding my breath.

The Hype Train

And look, I get it. AI is cool. It can do some amazing things. But it’s not magic. It’s not gonna solve all our problems. It’s not gonna make us all rich. But you wouldn’t know that from the hype.

I was over coffee at the place on 5th with another friend, let’s call her Sarah. She’s a teacher, not a techie. But even she’s heard about AI. “Everyone’s talking about it,” she said. “They say it’s gonna replace teachers. Is that true?” I told her, “Sarah, if AI can handle a classroom of 214 kids, then I’ll eat my hat.” She laughed, but it’s not funny. People are scared. And for what?

I mean, sure, AI can write a decent article. It can even write a poem. But it can’t think. It can’t feel. It can’t experience the world. It’s just a tool. A very fancy, very complex tool. But still just a tool.

But What About the Good Stuff?

Okay, okay. I’ll give AI some credit. It’s gonna aquisition some cool stuff. It’s gonna help us do some things better, faster, cheaper. But it’s not gonna revolutionize the world. It’s not gonna make us all smarter. It’s not gonna bring world peace.

I remember when the internet was new. Everyone thought it was gonna change everything. And it did, in some ways. But it also brought us spam, and trolls, and fake news. And now we’ve got AI deepfakes and who knows what else. Progress, right?

But hey, maybe I’m just a grumpy old tech journalist. Maybe I’m just resistant to change. Maybe I’m just not seeing the big picture. I don’t know. But I do know this: we’re all gonna regret this AI gold rush. Mark my words.

So What’s the Answer?

I don’t know. Maybe there isn’t one. Maybe we just need to wait and see. Maybe we need to stop and think for a minute. Maybe we need to remember that technology is a tool, not a savior.

And look, I’m not saying we should all go live in a cave. I’m just saying we should maybe, I don’t know, take a breath? Stop and think about what we’re doing. Because right now, it feels like we’re just running headlong into the future without any idea of where we’re going or what we’re doing.

I mean, I could be wrong. Maybe AI is gonna save us all. Maybe it’s gonna bring us world peace and end hunger and cure cancer. Maybe it’s gonna make us all rich. But I’m not holding my breath.

So, you know, maybe it’s time to slow down. Maybe it’s time to think. Maybe it’s time to remember that technology is a tool, not a magic wand. And maybe, just maybe, it’s time to stop and ask ourselves if we’re really ready for this.

But hey, what do I know? I’m just a grumpy old tech journalist. What do you think? Are we ready for this AI revolution? Or are we just gonna regret this?

But for now, I’m gonna go have a coffee and try to forget about AI for a while. Because honestly, I need a break. And I think we all do.
