I Got Scammed by an AI Last Week
Look, I’m supposed to be the tech-savvy one. The guy who gets it. But last Tuesday, at 11:30pm, I got played by some AI-powered scam app. It was smooth, it was convincing, and honestly? I feel stupid.
It started innocently enough. I was at a conference in Austin, swapping business cards with some guy named Marcus (probably not his real name). He told me about this new productivity app, said it’d change my life. I was skeptical, but he showed me the features, and I was sold. So, I downloaded it.
Big mistake.
Here’s the Thing About AI and Privacy
I’m not gonna sit here and pretend I’m some privacy purist. I mean, I’ve got a Gmail account, for crying out loud. But this app? It was asking for way too much. Contacts, messages, location data, the works. I should’ve said no. But I didn’t.
And that’s the problem, isn’t it? AI is getting better at manipulating us. It’s getting better at convincing us to hand over our data. And we’re letting it happen.
I talked to a colleague named Dave about this. He said, “You’re not the first, and you won’t be the last.” Which… yeah. Fair enough.
What Can We Do About It?
First off, stop being dumb. I know, I know, easier said than done. But seriously, think before you download. Think before you sign up. And for the love of all that’s holy, use a disposable phone number for app signup if you’re not sure about an app.
Second, demand better from the companies making this stuff. They need to be more transparent about what they’re collecting and why. They need to give us more control over our data.
Third, and this is a big one, stop believing everything you see. AI is getting good at generating fake news, fake reviews, fake everything. It’s getting hard to tell what’s real and what’s not. So, be skeptical. Question things. Don’t just take what you see at face value.
A Tangent: The Time I Tried to Outsmart an AI
About three months ago, I tried to outsmart an AI. I was playing a game, and I thought I could trick it into giving me more points. Spoiler alert: I couldn’t. It outsmarted me. It adapted to my strategy and beat me. It was humbling, to say the least.
But here’s the thing: I learned something from that experience. I learned that AI is getting smarter. It’s getting better at learning from us and adapting to us. And if we’re not careful, it’s gonna leave us in the dust.
So, what’s the takeaway here? I’m not sure. Maybe it’s that we need to be more careful. Maybe it’s that we need to demand more from the companies making this stuff. Maybe it’s that we need to stop being so trusting.
I don’t know. All I know is that I’m gonna be more careful next time. I’m gonna think twice before I download. I’m gonna question things more. And I’m gonna try to stay one step ahead of the AI.
Because if I don’t, I’m gonna get played again. And I don’t wanna feel stupid twice.
